Custom MTB Lessons

Lessons are a great way to maximize your time with an instructor as you focus on your needs as a rider. Our instructors are available to teach custom lessons based around your availability and individual goals. All lessons require a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. Catamount staff may need more time to accommodate a lesson depending on the season.

Please email requests to members@catamountoutdoor.org and include dates and time of interest, current ability, and goals for your lesson.

Lesson Fees:

TRY-MTB Lessons: $225
Sign up for 3 lessons and get an Annual Bike Only Membership upon completion!

Semi-Private: $60/hour (per person)
Private Lesson: $75/hour

Please contact us if you are interested in scheduling a lesson. Instructor availability varies throughout the season.

Please note that any youth under the age of 6 will require a guardian to be present for the duration of the lesson.

Carolyn Siccama
Carolyn SiccamaSummer MTB Coach
Carolyn has been teaching beginner and intermediate mountain bike clinics at Catamount for 6 years. She absolutely loves teaching people how to mountain bike and watching the confidence level of each rider unfold over the duration of a 3 hour clinic! Over 30 years ago Carolyn learned to mountain bike by taking a “learn to mountain bike” clinic at Catamount with Lucy and Abby McCullough. She loves being able to give back to the sport where it all began. When not on a mountain bike you can find Carolyn trail running, nordic skiing, leaning to golf, or working at UVM where she is an Instructional Designer.
Justin Bennett
Justin BennettSummer and Winter Adventure Instructor
Justin has been skiing close to 20 years, downhill as well as cross country. He also enjoys road biking, mountain biking, hiking, basically any type of excuse to be outdoors. Justin has been a downhill instructor for about 5 years, and is looking forward to sharing the outdoors with others!
Andy Coddington

Andy, a BICP Level I instructor, has been obsessed with bikes since he first felt the freedom of two wheels as a child. As a teenager he raced XC right here at Catamount before heading west to discover lift service DH. More recently he ditched the knobby tires and rode a touring bike from Portland OR to Portland ME.
John Atkinson
John AtkinsonGravity Logic Level 1 freeride coach & Bike/Walk Smart educator.
John has been helping people become better riders for 30 years and is a certified Gravity Logic Level 1 freeride coach and a Bike/Walk Smart educator. His primary focus is working with new and less aggressive riders looking to build confidence and skill sets in a patient fun environment.

Women-Only 1/2 Day Intro to Mountain Biking Skills Clinic

Join Coach Sheila & Carolyn for another beginner focused MTB Skills Clinic for female identifying folks this spring!

This session is designed to provide solid foundation skills, including body mechanics, bike handling, braking, shifting, negotiating trail obstacles and features, and balance. Our goal is to give you the building blocks to a solid foundation on your bike or to provide an early season refresher to help restore comfort and confidence on the trails. This clinic is designed for novice riders but ability to ride on a flat trail is recommended. Need helping learning how to ride before the clinic? Check out our MTB lesson options!

Women-Only 1/2 Day Intermediate MTB Skills Clinic

Join Coach Sheila & Carolyn for another MTB Skills Clinic for female identifying folks looking to build on their foundational MTB skills.

In this clinic, we will build upon beginner skills in a safe and supportive environment. We will explore beginner and intermediate trails and terrain including roots, rocks, dirt and wood features. We will also play some bike games while practicing drills and skills. We will continue to practice braking, body positioning on the bike and skill blending (breaking, riding, shifting and pedaling). Fun challenges await in this clinic from climbing and descending single track trails, to rock walls, to Gullywumper. Come join us! Limit 16 participants.

Prerequisites include completion of a beginner skills clinic at Catamount in the past 3 years OR all of the following skills:
  • Eyes forward and scanning ahead while riding
  • Covering breaks with one finger while riding
  • Use of both brakes to slow down and stop
  • “Neutral” and “Ready” riding positions
  • Pedaling on flat and varied terrain
  • Standup riding on flat and varied terrain with even pedals
  • Turning in both directions
August 10th- Intermediate Skills Clinic (Register Here) $80/person

Introduction to MTB Maintenance: ‘Spring cleanup’

Are you getting stoked for bike season but you’re not quite sure how to get your bike ready to roll on your own? Are you feeling overwhelmed with the amount of information floating around and just want someone to show you in person? Are you looking to build your bike care knowledge and become more independent in your maintenance skills?

Join us at Catamount for the “Spring Cleanup” Intro to MTB Maintenance Clinic where you will learn important skills like:

  • How to pick out the proper tools & supplies
  • Where and when to lubricate
  • How to clean your bike
  • Troubleshoot & safety checks: ID problem areas and know when more work is needed
  • How to change your tire or fix a flat
*Please note that this event will be held outside so please prepare accordingly. Should there be inclement weather day of, there will be an indoor space that can be used for the clinic.
