SUMMARY:Managing Forests for Carbon and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Tony D’Amato\, of the University of Vermont\, and Ethan Tapper\, the Chittenden County\nForester\, for a free\, public walk focusing on how to take care of our forests in a changing climate! \nThe walk will take place at the Catamount Community Forest (CCF) in Williston\, on the site of a\nforest management project scheduled to begin in August\, 2023. The forest management project at\nthe CCF will be part of a nation-wide collaborative effort called “Adaptive Silviculture for Climate\nChange (ASCC)” — a network of research and demonstration sites designed to learn more about\nhow to manage forests in a changing climate. Learn more about ASCC here: \n\nHome \n\nAt the same time\, the project at the CCF will showcase responsible forest management for climate\nresilience and adaptability\, renewable resources\, wildlife habitat\, biodiversity and more.\nInterpretive educational signage has been installed throughout the project area\, and there will be\nnumerous walks\, talks\, events and opportunities for the public to learn more about the project in\nthe coming year. \nDr. D’Amato has been the chair of the University of Vermont’s Forestry program since 2016. He has\ncoauthored well over 100 peer-reviewed articles and is co-author of Ecological Silviculture:\nFoundations and Applications. Among other objectives\, his research focuses on understanding both\nnatural and managed forest systems\, and how to manage forests in a responsible way in light of\nchanging global conditions and societal objectives. \nEthan Tapper is the Chittenden County Forester for the Vermont Department of Forests\, Parks and\nRecreation. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Catamount for the SECOND annual RUTFest (Richmond Ultra Trail Festival)! \nThis is a weekend devoted to running and hiking local trails with our community. This 36-hour “race” includes two different 3-4 mile trail loops at Catamount\, with gorgeous views of Camel’s Hump and Mansfield. These two loops are run on repeat\, whenever you want. This is the weekend to run (or walk) further than you ever have before. \nEntry fee this year is a $20 donation to Sky’s the Limit Fund\, Camp Exclamation Point\, the RTRC\, or Catamount Outdoor Center. \nRegistered participants will receive event updates and info by email. All participants will be asked to sign up for a 1-hour volunteer shift at the aid station as well as donate a snack to the aid station. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Richard Tom Foundation\, we are thrilled to announce the 3rd Annual Fat Bike Rally!\nBack in 2020\, The RTF provided matching funds to individual donors to help raise the money needed to purchase the SnowDog groomer that Catamount uses on our fat bike network! COFC and RTF have rallied each year since then to offer this space for folks to come together and enjoy this winter sport. Join us in exploring the fat bike trails throughout the Catamount Community Forest for free on February 5th\, 2023. Grab your fat bike\, or one of the free demo bikes provided at the event\, and join in on the fun as we celebrate winter biking together! \nThis years event has a limited number of fat bike demos available and each will be available for 50 minutes per ride. Although the demos are complementary\, a credit card is required to be held on file for some bike rentals. Priority will be given to those participating in a group ride. There will be two guided group rides throughout the day. \nDon’t miss the Sprint Race at 1:30pm. Bring your bike and go head to head with another fat biker. Or perhaps\, a skier! Not interested in racing? DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second Outta-This-World Science Fun Night! \nAre you interested in a fun evening filled with telescope history\, science\, and engineering for the whole family? Then you are in the right place! \nCheryl Owens\, content creator at  Art to Know with MommyO™ and Art Adventure Box®\, will guide you through constructing your telescope while presenting oodles of exciting astronomy facts. After all that\, you’ll blast off into the night sky for an unforgettable stargazing adventure around 7:30pm! \nCost is $60 per telescope kit. You can work independently or as a family unit. We have seating accommodations for 2-3 people per kit. We welcome more folks to join us for this fun evening but note that some of your group may have to stand or work on the floor during the indoor portion of this program. Please reach out with any questions about this.\nMust be 16 years of age or older to work independently. \nNo previous experience or skills necessary.
